The Gallery opens a new art exhibition featuring representational landscape and still-life paintings by renowned American painter, Keith Gunderson of Kerhonkson, NY.
The first week of December 2018, found us in New Smyrna Beach. I was invited to participate in the annual New Smyrna Beach paint out so Janet and I actually drove all the way from Kerhonkson to this Florida beach town, loading up the Forester with frames and clothing and hoping for the best.

This is one of my entries to the Hudson Valley Plein Air festival 2018 which was held the second week of October 2018. I painted the scene on a rainy night down at the Strand in Kingston, NY.
It was awarded the Best in Show for which I am grateful to my fellow artist participants that judged the show as well as the staff at the Walkill school of Art who made this event possible.

Here are two versions of Florida Moonrise that I painted over two days. While finishing up a plein air painting on the property of the Conservancy of Southwest Florida https://www.conservancy.org/ I noticed the moon peeking over the palm trees and quickly batted out a 10" x 14" sketch of the effect. I resolved to come back the next day and try a larger version, arriving well before the effect of the moonrise but also allowing for the later moonrise time so that I could lay in the great masses and composition so that all would be ready for the final color adjustments once the lighting and moonrise were at peak effect.
I painted this at the Rye Yacht Club during a day where the winds were gusting from 20 to 30 knots. I painted this from inside a boat house with the door open, otherwise, it would have been virtually impossible to paint in this kind of wind.
This is a painting I made plein air at the Conservancy of Southwest Flordia in Naples, Florida. Not far from the Carribean Gardens zoo, the conservancy occupies the Flieischman property which once was vast orange groves. As I was painting this scene I became lost in thought, as plein air painters often will, to be startled back into reality by the roaring of a lion. My first thought was that it must be a Florida panther and I kind of freaked. After a moment , I realized it was coming from the zoo, but the sound of the roaring lion carried through the orange groves and palms and really sounded like it was very close!
I painted this scene plein air in a barn near Yorktown, NY. The warm afternoon light silhouetted the cows' contra jour and this contrasted nicely with the cool light pouring into the barn from the east facing doors.
I painted this painting of the sculpture studios at the Art Students League of New York. I was making clay sculptures and learning casting for a time in the mornings there and was always fascinated by the skylit windows that face onto 58th Street. These northlight windows face onto the street and once had unobstructed light when the American Fine Arts building was built in 1892. Since then, Manhattan has grown up all around and I'll always remember the effect of working on my sculptures on a rainy day and seeing the New Yorkers with their umbrellas silhouetted against the dirty milk glass of these windows scurrying by- sort of like some painting that Manet or Degas would paint.
Just north of Portland Maine, there are a number of islands that jut out into Casco Bay, and among these is one called Bailey Island. It was here that I painted this view of Peter Rodger's Lobster Pound. Peter Rodgers was a man that was larger than life- as authentic a Maine lobsterman as there ever was- a character out of Kipling or Stevenson.
This is a portrait of Rudy. It is painted in oils on a gesso masonite panel. The gesso is a mixture of rabbit skin glue, whiting (powdered and washed white chalk- calcium carbonate) and titanium white. Although very laborious to make- it's degree of absorbency and slickness is unexcelled.
Not too far from where I painted the previous painting is where I painted this scene.It's at Liberty State Park- looking north from the old Morris canal in Jersey City. There's a kind of marina there .Hardly recognisable now with all the development. A gritty part of town in a city with a lot of heart.

I used a palette knife for this one and because of the quickly ebbing long shadows of winter, I worked very fast without a drawing on canvas paper.
I've recently uploaded some new work, or to be more accurate, work that I have "refreshed", to my website. I'm new to Daily Paint Works and have started uploading images of paintings to the daily forum of work that appears on my screen every morning. It's very inspiring and I have learned a lot from what the other participating artists are doing regarding the promotion and sale of their work. It's really a very focused and serious enterprise, selling one's paintings, and the benefits of learning from many other pairs of eyes is invaluable.
