When in Manhattan I try to take the Staten Island Ferry across and back which gives me great motifs to paint with my watercolors.

Here are two versions of this scene painted by John Sloan around 1907, along with an intaglio etching. Sloan titled the two paintings "In the Wake of the Ferry".Version one  is in the Phillips collection in Philadelphia and version two is in Detroit.

This was an etching Sloan made around the same time.

In Central Park

A path in Central Park.. a moment in time that is captured by light and thought.

The Bow Bridge

Mid-park at 74th street is the Bow Bridge. This was a quick plein air sketch from along the promenade on a cold blustery day in November.

The Bridge itself was designed during the mid 19th century by Calvert Vaux and Jacob Wrey Mould.

Jersey City Tugs

Not too far from where I painted the previous painting is where I painted this scene.It's at Liberty State Park- looking north from the old Morris canal in Jersey City. There's a kind of marina there .Hardly recognisable now with all the development. A gritty part of town in a city with a lot of heart.

Central Park Gazebo

This was painted plein air from a Central Park gazebo which is perched on a rocky knoll  just off Sixth Ave. looking east.

Springtime in Central Park

I found myself up along the west side of Central Park where I found this view of a fountain in Central Park on a sunny day in April.

Looking south, this was painted plein air on canvas paper and clipped to a piece of masonite.

Conservatory Water

This is a plein air late afternoon winter scene that I painted in Central Park. It is a view on the sledding hill overlooking Conservatory Water, the pond and model boat pavilion at 72nd street and Fifth Ave.

I used a palette knife for this one and because of the quickly ebbing long shadows of winter, I worked very fast without a drawing on canvas paper.

Winter on Sixth Ave.

I painted this little thumb box sketch at the foot of Sixth Ave. at Central Park on a winter;s day in January..

I painted this from Liberty state Park,, a view of some old tugs moored in the old Morris Canal.

Ellis Island

Here's a plein -aire sketch of Ellis Island from Liberty State Park in Jersey City. It's late afternoon, just before sunset, and the rays of the sun were creating this beautiful shimmering progression in the sky and water, almost like one sees in the Venetian paintings of Moran and Sargeant. That's the Staten Island ferry on the left, plowing it's way back and forth across New York harbor. Brooklyn and the Verrazzano bridge loom in the distance.

Columbus Circle

Here's a Manhattan night scene I did recently from a plen-aire sketch. I was camped out on the stone benches so I had a little bit of privacy- although it was difficult to step back from it to see masses. I tried to indicate the hundreds of lights with broad strokes-more to imply them than to actually get caught up in detail which would weigh down the painting.

Early Morning New Paltz

I painted this scene early this morning for the Mark Gruber Gallery's Paint the Town show. Mark holds this annual plein-aire event for selected artists where the theme of the show is the local New Paltz New York scene. This is a view down Main Street with the Shawangunk Mountains looming in the background. Very early on weekend mornings, just an hour or so after the popular college bars have closed for the night, finds the owner of P&G's, sweeping the street and airing out the bar for the start of a new day.

Poughkeepsie View

Painted this scene from Poughkeepsie of a view toward the Hudson for the Millbrook Paint-Out. Beautiful old civil war era buildings frame the foreground with the Old Railroad bridge on the right.
