Bob Ross in New Smyrna Beach

Bob Ross in New Smyrna Beach

After doing some grocery shopping at Publix in New Smyrna Beach we discovered the Bob Ross Art Workshop and Gallery, which occupied a storefront in the adjacent strip mall.We entered to find a room full of students, all learning about landscape painting on their way to becoming certified in the Ross technique

Bob Ross is known for the The Joy of Painting is an American half-hour instructional television show hosted by painter Bob Ross which ran from January 11, 1983 until May 17, 1994. In each episode, Ross taught techniques for landscape oil painting, completing a painting in each session. Ross used the wet-on-wet oil painting technique, in which the painter continues adding paint on top of still-wet paint rather than waiting a lengthy amount of time to allow each layer of paint to dry. From the beginning, the program kept the selection of tools and colors simple so that viewers would not have to make large investments in expensive equipment. Combining the wet painting method with the use of large one- and two-inch brushes, as well as painting knives, allowed Ross to paint trees, clouds, mountains, and water in a matter of seconds. Each painting would start with simple strokes that appeared as nothing more than smudges of color. As he added more and more strokes, the blotches would transform into intricate landscapes

Hudson Valley Plein Air 2018

This is one of my entries to the Hudson Valley Plein Air festival 2018 which was held the second week of October 2018. I painted the scene on a rainy night down at the Strand in Kingston, NY.

It was awarded the Best in Show for which I am grateful to my fellow artist participants that judged the show as well as the staff at the Walkill school of Art who made this event possible.

Florida Moonrise

Florida Moonrise

Here are two versions of Florida Moonrise that I painted over two days. While finishing up a  plein air painting on the property of the Conservancy of Southwest  Florida  https://www.conservancy.org/ I noticed the moon peeking over the palm trees and quickly batted out a 10" x 14" sketch of the effect. I resolved to come back the next day and try a larger version, arriving well before the effect of the moonrise but also allowing for the later moonrise time so that I could lay in the great masses and composition so that all would be ready for the final color adjustments once the lighting and moonrise were at peak effect.

Winter Sentinels is a painting that i made of a stand of Sycamores in a field near my house.

New York City Art Studio

A watercolor painting I made in the studio of my friend Janet , which occupied the front parlor of the top floor of a nineteenth century five story walkup on the corner of 55th Street and 8th Ave. Amazing light but also a real sense of New York City when the windows were open and you could feel the energy of the throngs of people and activity below. Yet on a still gray day it could be quiet and serene.

Blue Jay Nest

One spring a blue jay family raised up their young right next to the back porch at the Vermont house oin Stowe. I always had some paints and an easel setup out there and just sat down and painted.

Fulton Street Fish Market

Here'a painting that I painted at the Fulton Street Fish Market in Manhattan. I love doing these paintings of the fish market, all of which I made at 4:00 in the morning en Plein air.

Old St. Patrick's Cathedral

​Here's a nocturne I painted of Old St. Patrick's church in Manhattan. I was standing on the corner of Prince and Lafayette and had a little thumb box with me - very stealthy.

In Central Park

A path in Central Park.. a moment in time that is captured by light and thought.

Giant Steps

I painted this scene on Bailey Island Maine at a place called Giant Steps. I painted from the same spot that Frederick Waugh used to paint from.

Easton Crape Myrtle

I painted this painting en plein air in Easton Maryland. The Crape Myrtle bush blooms in the late spring in Maryland and the color is brilliant, similar to Bouganvilla in intensity. Quinac Red Rose seems to be the only color that can do it justice.

Everglades City Town Hall

A painting that I made plein air of city hall in Everglades City, Florida. Rapidly vanishing old Florida in the middle of the Everglades.

In the Barn

I painted this scene plein air in a barn near Yorktown, NY. The warm afternoon light silhouetted the cows' contra jour and this contrasted nicely with the cool light pouring into the barn from the east facing doors.

Honeymoon Island.

North of Clearwater is a favorite place of mine. It;s called Honeymoon Island and there I can indulge in painting one of my most favorite motifs- palm trees.
