The gallery is the invention of Roger Greenwald, not only the director of the gallery but the owner of the Spa and Inn at Beacon as well as the architect of the newly constructed five story contemporary brownstone.

Gunderson Plein Air 2012- Samuel Morse Estate

This is a video with impressions of this last Sunday's plein air  (peinture sur le motif ) class at the Samuel F.B. Morse estate "Locust Grove" in Poughkeepsie, New York. From Sunday's class...it's all about MASSING- only way you can really see the vortex. Piecing together the mosaic of a three dimensional ball of light against an atmosphereic progression seems ludicrious-a waste of time as it's easier to squint down , hold on to the masses, let brush pressure calibrate the changes of value and tone.

Shattemuc Plein Air Paint Out & Auction 2012

This weekend we attended the Shattemuc Yacht Club's annual paint out event, held at the clubhouse marina in Ossinning  on the Hudson. Right across the river looms Hook mountain, which glowed reddish and as the morning mists burned off . A very nice motif.

Plein-Aire Class New Hamburg July 2012

This morning's class was held at the New Hamburg Marina- a small 19th century hamlet of buildings on the Hudson which is nestled at the mouth of Wappingers Creek.

Plein-Aire Hyde Park Marina July 2012

We had a plein-aire class today...Sunday mornings everyone!... at the Hyde Park Marina, just north of Marist College. For most sunny day morning scenes the emphasis is on the great Morning Sky Progression...i.e., the two overlapping progressions of the horizon to zenith of the vault and the strengthening morning sun vortex that emanates from the East.

Hudson Nocturne

This is a night-time painting I did at the site of the old Brass Anchor restaurant which burned down last year. The marina was relatively empty, although I eliminated all the boats except the one up on supports on the gravel berme which forms the mouth of the harbor. The moonlight and the single boat emphasized the loneliness of the scene which was what most impressed me about the place.

New Hamburg

Saturday-for a late afternoon scene, looking away from the sun with all it's strong coloration, I chose a little gem of a view along the Hudson at New Hamburg. The old stone house, with it's interesting windows, became a foil for the sleek boat , proped up with supports and balancing on its keel.

Painted this scene from Poughkeepsie of a view toward the Hudson for the Millbrook Paint-Out. Beautiful old civil war era buildings frame the foreground with the Old Railroad bridge on the right.
